October Membership Meeting and Meet Your Board

We had a great time together in community at our October membership meeting. We started the meeting with a blessing in Cherokee, visited together, met the candidates running for election to the board and voted, ate a delicious potluck, reflected on Rob Wood’s service to the CNCV, received health education on stroke symptoms and the importance of getting quick treatment, heard an introduction from everyone present, and played many games of chunkey outside on the grass.

What’s Chunkey?

Chunkey is a traditional game that Cherokees play, dating as far back as 600 CE in the Cahokia region, which is now present-day St. Louis, Missouri (older than stickball). The rules and equipment are simple.

The game requires one chunkey stone or disc traditionally made of clay, sandstone, or granite, and each player has a 8-to-10-foot spear. Stone sizes varied, but were typically between 2 inches and 6 inches in diameter with concave or convex sides and about 2 inches thick. While the chunkey stone is rolling away, spears are thrown or tossed towards it. Whoever's spear sticks in the ground or lands closest to the stone after it stops rolling receives a point. Games end when a player gets 11 or 12 points.

Wado again to Gerrit Fenega for carving a beautiful chunkey stone for our community to use! We’re looking forward to playing many more games next year!

Meet your Board!

We are so grateful to those willing to volunteer their valuable time and energy giving back to our community! Our board members dedicate countless hours to our community, being compensated only with the joy and fulfilment that comes by serving in the spirit of gadugi.

At our October election this year, we voted in Jackie Robbins and Sheila Zangrilli for another two years of dedicated service and welcome newly elected board member, Paul David Terry, who has been serving dutifully as an Associate Board Member over the past year.
