SPOKESPERSON’S MESSAGE: May 2023 Newsletter

Osiyo nigad! (hello, everyone!)

I hope everyone had a great time at the Chief’s annual visit and picnic last month! The picnic had record-breaking attendance with over 880 attendees and over 330 Cherokee Nation citizens register for their photo ID cards.

We’re keeping the party going with a lot to look forward to in the next couple months. This weekend, we’ll have an informational table at the Twin Rivers Unified School District Pow-Wow/Big Time and hosting a clean up of John Rollin Ridge’s family plot in Grass Valley.

You’ll want to reserve your campsite early for our annual campout at Gold Country Campground Resort in Pine Grove. This year it’s taking place July 28th through July 30th. To reserve a spot, call (209) 296-4650 or visit https://www.goldcountrycampground.com/. The deadline to make reservations is June 28th, so mark your calendars—or better yet make your reservation TODAY.

In this month’s newsletter, we feature outstanding Cherokee youth in our community. We celebrate Irie Leach who appeared in the Cherokee Phoenix, our tribal newspaper, for participating in the Cherokee Nation Veterans Affairs Valentine’s Day project. We’re also incredibly proud to profile 16-year-old Everett ᏚᏯ Bean who recently completed a prestigious water protectors course at UC Davis and presented at a tribal water summit in Sacramento. Our young people are doing outstanding work, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share their accomplishments and success with our community.

That’s it for now. We hope you can make the campout in July!
