CHAIRPERSON MESSAGE: August 2024

ᎣᏏᏲ ᏂᎦᏛ osiyo nigad! (hello, everyone!)

We have lots of information and pictures to share in this newsletter! We enjoyed our June membership meeting with more time spent getting to know each other and visiting. Deirdre Fitzgerald with Brass Forest Studios shares many beautiful photos for us all to enjoy here.

At the meeting, we also heard from representatives who attended the CCO Conference of Community Leaders and Cultural Enrichment days. You can see more about the trip here.

For events, we have our annual campout coming up on August 23rd through 25th! You’ll want to reserve your campsite or lodging early for the campout at Angels Camp Fairgrounds. Make your reservations for staying next door to the Fairgrounds at Angels Camp RV by visiting https://angelscamprv.com/home/ or calling 209-736-0404. We’re also looking for a few volunteers to help with preparing our big Saturday night dinner (email cncv.communications@gmail.com).

We also have a virtual meet and greet scheduled with our Sister City, Marble City Activity Organization on September 21, a second language intensive in October with virtual (live) lessons and an in-person weekend (October 12-13), and a membership gathering and potluck coming up on October 19.

Also in this month’s newsletter, we feature a fascinating profile on Cherokee Nation citizen and CNCV member, Ganel Fenenga, CNCV Board member Mike Webb delves into the history of Decoration Month and Day celebrated in Oklahoma and Cherokee Nation communities, our Cherokee Language Study Group newly formed twice-monthly meetings, a new fundraiser to win a beautiful flute and a book by Julia Coates, information on our upcoming October election, and a brief dive into peaches (which we’ll be enjoying as dessert at our annual campout!).

The CNCV also has a resource webpage for you with many informative links for citizenship, language, culture, history, health, education, veterans, and more. It's a work in progress and we'll be adding to it as time goes on. Let us know if you'd like to see something specifically there.

We hope to see everyone at the campout in August!

ᏙᏓᏓᎪᎲᎢ dodadagohvi ‘til we meet again,

-- Sabrina McKinney
