Cherokee Language Study Group

Osiyo nigad (hello everyone),

Sheila daquadoa (my name is Sheila). I have been trying to learn the Tsalagi language for many years on my own. No one in my family spoke the language and no community to support this path. If your story is similar or you are just now discovering the desire to learn, good news!  A group has been started to support each other’s journey.

On the first and third Monday of the month, we are gathering together in a Zoom meeting to learn and practice Tsalagi. This is a very informal group.  There is no instructor because no one is a “speaker”. There is a plan in the works to gather together about once a month for a game night (or day).

We have started a Google classroom to help folks learn Cherokee and communicate info on our Zoom study groups. Send an email note to svzangrilli56@gmail.com to receive the invite and class code. It’s a work in progress, with resources and community. Everyone is welcome regardless of level of ability even if you don’t think you can learn.

The Cherokee Nation online Language Community classes are another a great resource. These are no-cost and are conducted by renowned Cherokee language instructor, Ed Fields. There are a variety of times to watch and the classes are archived to watch later or watch again. Classes occur in Spring, Summer, and Fall. Cherokee Nation and our CNCV group announces these on Facebook. You can register through learn.cherokee.org

This is a no judgement zone. Join us.

Dodadagohvi (until we meet again),
